IOE (Input Output Exception) is an immersive, site-specific photographic project developed inside the Duomo di Milano. It observes individuals engaged in the act of photographing with their mobile phones, focusing on the subtle choreography of their bodies—arms raised, gestures calibrated—as they frame the image and respond to the natural light filtering through the stained glass.
As I observe these figures, I am struck by the convergence of gesture, ritual, and belief. The cathedral’s ornate architecture evokes a sense of historical and spiritual gravity, while the act of image-making anchors these bodies in the present. The use of mobile phones becomes a performative act, a movement through space and time in pursuit of a fleeting image, where the device assumes an ambiguous role as both tool and mediator.
People of different cultures, backgrounds, and religions appear united in a shared ritual: lifting their phones before their faces like contemporary relics, suspended in a state that recalls a form of secular devotion. Within this sacred environment, technology does not oppose spirituality but subtly intertwines with it, suggesting new forms of connection that border on the mystical.
